Ashwaghandha - CLR Vision Magazine January 2023 Issue

Ash-wah-gah-n-da - This herb went viral the past year for its vast amount of holistic benefits. Users claimed these miracle Ashwaghanda vitamins would increase libido, improve hormone levels in men and women, reduce anxiety, and boost cognitive functions. I was so convinced of its authenticity that I even tried it myself!

So where did this mysterious Ashwaghanda come from?

This small shrub is a plant that is native to India, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. It is not common to see this plant naturally growing outside of these areas, but it can be cultivated and grown in sunny, warm, and dry areas. The plant consists of a green root and red fruits that are contained within a green casing and appear as a red berry but are actually non-edible. Instead the fruits have dozens of seeds within them - making Ashwaghanda extremely fruitful.

Most historic uses of Ashwaghanda have been identified in India’s Ancient Holistic Medical Systems. It was mainly used as an adaptogenic herb (a plant noteworthy for its ability to improve stress and anxiety) used for calming - hence the name somnífera which is Latin for “sleep-inducing”. The name “Ashwaghanda” is Sanskrit for “smell of the horse” deriving from the plant’s distinct odor and strengthening benefits.

Modern uses of Ashwaghanda still utilize its anti-anxiety/anti-depressent effects. In women, the supplement can increase fertility and libido and balance hormones. In men, it can also improve hormone levels in addition to energy and stamina. Its calming effects have also aided in insomnia and focus - which I can personally attest to. Since I began taking Ashwaghanda supplements, I have been falling asleep easier and my emotions have seemed a bit more mellow and stable. However, if you plan on incorporating any supplement into your daily routine, please take caution and do you research before doing so.
