Garnet stems from the Greek word for pomegranate “granatum”. Surprisingly, this is a group of minerals which naturally occur in a variety of colors depending on the region they are found, but the most common are the ruby red varietal of the stone. Egyptian pharaohs would wear necklaces decorated with garnet and would be mummified with them to take into the afterlife. Centuries later, garnet became a widely traded gem in Roman societies, and would continue to be consistently mined all the way to modern day. Garnet is considered a revitalizing and energizing crystal which can act as a blood and heart stimulate. It is believed to aid in love and passion and symbolizes relationships. Garnet is a beautiful stone to give to a loved one as an act of love, to express commitment, or to cover one with protection.
